International Women’s Day: Operation Fistula Viz-a-Thon
March 8 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
**Please note the date and time for this event have been updated**
Operation Fistula will be launching a Visualize Gender Equality project on National Women’s Day!
Please join us as they kick off this one year project in partnership with Makeover Monday. We will be visualizing data in order to end gender inequality and fuel global action.
Data Viz DC, the DC Tableau User Group, and the Data Visualization Society are excited to co-host a DC viz-a-thon event to celebrate this impactful project.
What is the Visualize Gender Equality project?
The year long project will kick off on International Women’s Day in partnership with Makeover Monday. Each month a data set on critical topics (obstetric fistula, child marriage, gender- based violence, and more) will be released. Participants will create visualizations each month that could potentially be featured on Makeover Monday or Tableau Conference.
You can read more about the partnership between Tableau Foundation and Operation Fistula here: https://www.tableau.com/foundation/featured-projects/operation-fistula
What will we do at this Saturday hackathon?
Connect, collaborate, and learn about Operation Fistula so you can get a jump start on your visualizations!
Here’s a broad agenda for the day:
11:00am – Registration & refreshments
11:30am – Welcome, overview of project, break into groups
Noon – Lunch
3pm – Show and Tell
3:30pm – Wrap Up
Do I have to use Tableau if I’m developing visualizations at this event?
No, but it is a great opportunity to learn Tableau (since you’ll have enthusiastic DC-TUG members there to help!) by using the open Tableau Public platform and you’ll be able to stay connected to the year long initiative. If you’d prefer to design and develop in a different platform though, you’re welcome to use the same dataset in the tool of your choice!
In an effort to be inclusive towards all members, children are welcome to come for the event. Note we will not have dedicated childcare on site and you’ll be responsible for your little one, but we’re happy to have them attend!
