Model Versioning: Why, When, and How

Models are the new code. While machine learning models are increasingly being used to make critical product and business decisions, the process of developing and deploying ML models remain ad-hoc. In particular, one key operation that is often overlooked during the development and deployment of models is model versioning. While version control systems for code have existed for decades, we don’t have robust versioning systems for models. During my Ph.D. at MIT, I developed ModelDB, the first open-source model management solution that got adopted by research labs and industry alike. ModelDB has since evolved to be a complete model versioning system. In this talk, I discuss the different attributes of a model versioning system, the architecture adopted by ModelDB, and demonstrate via examples the downstream benefits of a robust model versioning system.
